Outer Banks Hematology
Oncology will soon offer selected clinical trials from UNC Linberger
Cancer Center. Patients will have available selected clinical trials
in Dare county. The recent appointment of Dr. Jose Acostamadiedo, as
faculty of UNC opens the doors for local patients to participate in
clinical trials without having to travel to Chapel Hill. Dr. Thomas
Shea in collaboration with Dr. Acostamadiedo are currently

UNC Health Care representatives
Dr. Thomas Shea and Kevin Fitzgerald told the Dare County Board
of Commissioners at its meeting last week, that the county is
significantly closer to having stronger cancer-related medical
services.
Shea and Fitzgerald initially addressed the commissioners at the
board's Dec. 3, 2007 meeting, regarding their plan to partner with
the Brody
School of Medicine and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina
to establish a UNC North
Carolina cancer hospital satellite office. At the most recent
meeting, they updated each section based upon progress made thus
far, and new ideas added.
Shea reported that a consultative clinic is scheduled to open on
June 6 of this year. The clinic will feature a rotating roster of
cancer
sub-specialists.
"Local Nags Head oncologist Dr. Jose
Acostamadiedo will assist with the logistics of the consultative
clinic and develop the tele-medicine program," said Shea. In
addition to his local duties, Acostamadiedo will begin a stint as an
adjunct professor [Clinical Associate Professor] at
UNC beginning May 1.
Dr. Shea also noted that the
first of two cancer patient navigator's has been hired. "The
navigators will develop a system for training cancer patient
advocates, help cancer patients access our health care system, and
will work with existing groups to enhance patient support," said
Shea.
The tele-medicine network, which is meant to provide second opinions
from across the state through tele-conferencing "tumor boards" and
direct patient evaluation at the Chapel Hill Cancer Hospital, also
is moving forward. "The continuing medical education curriculum [for
local physicians] is under development."
Shea and Fitzgerarld noted that the program should be started in
earnest by this summer, as the program develops the first of several
continuing education conferences for local physicians should take
place by next summer.
